Virtual Research Environment (VRE)

The virtual research environment (VRE) supports collaborative research and open science practices by providing a comprehensive suite of services and analytical tools covering the entire research workflow, from ideation and data collection to analysis and publication.

By combining tools, services, and computational resources in a unified environment, VREs reduce the complexity of managing research processes and promote innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

FOSSR VRE

Objectives

The main objectives of a Virtual Research Environment (VRE) are:

provide researchers with an integrated, collaborative and secure digital workspace that supports the entire research lifecycle;

promote practices that make research processes transparent, reproducible and accessible, fundamental pillars of open science.

VRE significantly improves research by facilitating seamless collaboration between researchers and promoting open science principles such as transparency and reproducibility.

Service description

The FOSSR VRE is implemented, managed and based on the D4Science infrastructure, developed and managed by CNR-ISTI.

This robust electronic infrastructure already hosts several virtual laboratories and offers a wide range of services tailored to meet the needs of the FOSSR project. In addition, D4Science provides proven solutions for connecting to external IT platforms and orchestrating distributed services, enabling seamless integration and intelligent connectivity with other infrastructures in the FOSSR cloud ecosystem.

The key features of FOSSR-VRE are:

facilitate collaboration

enable geographically dispersed researchers to work together seamlessly.

support open science

promote practices that make research processes transparent, reproducible and accessible.

allow access to tools and data

offer personalised access to datasets, analytical tools, computational resources and workflows specific to the research sector.

workflow simplification

covering all stages of research, from data collection and analysis to publication, sharing and reuse of results.

promotion of interoperability

integration with other electronic infrastructures, platforms and services to improve research capabilities.

To whom it is addressed

  • Researchers interested in policy evaluation
  • PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
