Italian Online Probability Panel (IOPP)

Objectives

IOPP aims to:

be a multi-purpose instrument, in line with the principles of Open Science, for carrying out high quality surveys on the population aged between 18 and 74 years resident in Italy;

to provide social research with representative, reliable and high-quality data, enabling longitudinal and topical analyses on the demographic, social and economic dynamics of the population;

to produce data for the social sciences with high scientific standards, through an accurate and rigorous design of survey instruments, sampling strategy and data collection phase;

offer an open and collaborative database to the scientific community and stakeholders to propose surveys for the analysis of social phenomena and dynamics;

increase the visibility and foster the dissemination of data on the Italian population among research institutions, policy makers and public opinion.

IOPP is the first national online probability panel of the Italian resident population aged between 18 and 74, for the execution of social surveys of high scientific quality.

Description of the service

IOPP is configured as:

panel

the same individuals are interviewed at regular intervals over time

longitudinal

the same information is collected at regular intervals over time

open in input

offers research staff, policy-makers, citizenship the opportunity to explore topics of interest in greater depth by supplementing the main questionnaire (core questionnaire) with thematic modules (additional questionnaire)

open in output

data are released via the FOSSR infrastructure, in Open format and in line with FAIR principles. The datasets follow international classifications to allow comparability with other major European and international surveys. The metadata offer a detailed description of the data so that they are effectively available to anyone who wants to use them

FAIR

The datasets are Findable through persistent identifiers (PIDs) and catalogued descriptive metadata; Accessible through authentication and authorisation systems; Interoperable, they can be combined and used together with other data or tools; Re-usable with an open access licence.

Between 2024 and 2025, the panel recruitment phase is expected to take place, at the end of which at least 10,000 participants, representative of the Italian resident population, are expected to be registered. Starting in 2025, and once fully established for the coming years, panelists will be interviewed at least five times a year. The questionnaires can be filled in directly via app or website. The interviews will be based on a basic questionnaire, divided into three waves, which will investigate a wide range of topics, such as family structure, housing condition, employment and economic situation, inequalities and social vulnerability, gender equality, digital skills, lifestyles and behaviours, opinions, values and attitudes of the population resident in Italy.

In all waves there will also be specific modules that can be implemented on a one-off basis or be repeated periodically over time. Additional modules may be proposed by individual researchers or research groups in order to investigate further phenomena of interest not envisaged by the core questionnaire or to deepen the topics already envisaged. To this end, recurring calls for proposals will be activated for submission, which will be evaluated on the basis of shared criteria by a committee consisting of members of the IOPP research group.

To whom it is addressed

IOPP is integrated within the FOSSR infrastructure and provides services to Italian and foreign research staff, policy makers and institutional actors, civil society as well as all internal project partners.
