Online Research Panel (ORP)

In the context of the European Union-funded FOSSR – Fostering Open Science in Social Science Research – NextGenerationEU project, the Online Research Panel (ORP) is being developed, one of the few research panels developed in Italy made accessible to researchers, academics and public agencies according to the Open Science principle.

ORP has the ability to ensure an accurate and diverse representation of the Italian population aged 18 and older.

Objectives

ORP’s objectives include the analysis of topics relevant to the social and economic sciences in order to support a wide range of academic and governmental applications:

ORP enables researchers to react quickly to new trends, but also to better understand different processes in their long-term context, a peculiarity of research panels.

The panel aims to bring together research from different scientific disciplines, enabling researchers and policymakers to understand how social, economic and environmental developments intersect and intertwine.

This multidisciplinary approach allows for a more complete and in-depth view of social and economic dynamics in Italy, thus providing a solid basis for policymaking and the implementation of targeted interventions.

ORP aims to provide researchers, academics and public agencies with a reliable source of data to inform scientific research and policy development, thereby contributing to a better understanding of social and economic phenomena at both national and international levels.

The Online Research Panel plays a key role in enabling scholars to explore and understand, for example, the dynamics of the Italian labor market, particularly with regard to high-skilled workers.

Description of the service

ORP is composed of Italian citizens selected to be interviewed regularly through online surveys on issues concerning politics, health, economy, society, and the environment.

The panel will enable the rapid collection of scientifically valid data on the behavior, preferences and attitudes of the population with respect to the most important issues on the Italian and international scene.

The features of the Online Research Panel built through the FOSSR project highlight several significant advantages:

rigorous design

broad coverage of the characteristics of the Italian population

robust methodology

large panel size

ORP stands out for its ability to reach and engage a wide range of people, including traditionally under-represented or hard-to-reach groups, such as those with PhDs, a focus that ORP is actively pursuing. This inclusion is particularly important because Ph.D.s represent a significant part of the academic community and the highly skilled workforce. In addition, ORP will focus on citizen participation with respect to political and environmental issues, examining, for example, the conditions that foster civil society vitality and economic development.
